How Pakistan Reached the Asian Games 2026 Final
Pakistan had to fight their way through a difficult semi-final against Bangladesh.
Rain reduced the match to 13 overs per side, with Bangladesh setting Pakistan a target of 112.
The chase became uncomfortable when Pakistan slipped to 53/4, but Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz completely changed the momentum.
Samad played an aggressive unbeaten knock of 30 from only 15 balls, while Hasan Nawaz remained not out on 27. The pair added an unbeaten 59 runs and took Pakistan to the target in just 11.3 overs.
Sufyan Moqim had earlier played a major role with the ball, taking 3/26.
That victory showed something Pakistan will need again against India: the ability to recover when the match begins to move away from them.
India Arrive After Dominating Sri Lanka
India's route to the final was much more straightforward.
Batting first against Sri Lanka, India posted 169/7, led by an unbeaten 80 from 46 balls by Ishan Kishan. Young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also contributed an attacking 38.
India's bowlers then completely dismantled Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for only 45 in 9.5 overs, giving India a massive 124-run victory.
Jasprit Bumrah struck early, while India's bowling attack never allowed Sri Lanka to build any momentum.
That performance makes India's new-ball attack one of the biggest challenges Pakistan will face in the final.

| Record | India | Pakistan |
| Matches | 17 | 17 |
| Wins | 13 | 3 |

India have therefore dominated the recent history of this matchup, but a final is still decided by one performance on one day.
The Recent Rivalry Has Been Painful for Pakistan
Pakistan's biggest concern is not only the overall head-to-head record.
India defeated Pakistan three times during the 2025 T20 Asia Cup in the group stage, Super Four and then the final.
| Asia Cup 2025 Match | Result |
| Group Stage | India won by 7 wickets |
| Super Four | India won by 6 wickets |
| Final | India won by 5 wickets |
India then defeated Pakistan again by 61 runs in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Those results have understandably created frustration among many Pakistani supporters.
But that recent history also gives Pakistan a clear opportunity in Japan: beating India for the Asian Games gold would immediately change the mood surrounding the rivalry.
Pakistan captain Sahibzada Farhan has already shown that he can score against India.
Despite Pakistan losing all three matches in the 2025 Asia Cup, Farhan made 40, 58 and 57, scoring 155 runs across the three games.
His challenge now is different.
The Asian Games final will require him to handle the opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah and prevent Pakistan from losing early wickets.
Farhan, Saim Ayub and Maaz Sadaqat may have to decide how aggressively Pakistan attack the new ball. Going too defensive could allow India to control the powerplay, but reckless aggression against Bumrah could expose Pakistan's middle order early.
Can Pakistan Bounce Back When Expectations Are Low?
Pakistan cricket has often been associated with unpredictability.
That does not mean a comeback against India is guaranteed. India's recent results, deeper international experience and current form give Pakistan a very difficult challenge.
But the Bangladesh semi-final demonstrated why Pakistan cannot be written off.
At 53/4, the match was beginning to slip away. Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz responded by attacking rather than simply surviving.
The final may require exactly that kind of fearless cricket.
Pakistan cannot afford to carry the defeats of the 2025 Asia Cup or the 2026 T20 World Cup into this match. They need to treat October 3 as a fresh contest.
Can Pakistan Win Asian Games Gold Against India?
That is now the biggest question.
Can Sahibzada Farhan produce another strong innings against India?
Can Saim Ayub, Hasan Nawaz and Abdul Samad handle India's experienced bowling attack?
Can Pakistan stop Ishan Kishan after his unbeaten 80 in the semi-final?
And can Sufyan Moqim and Abrar Ahmed create enough pressure against India's powerful batting lineup?
India are attempting to defend the Asian Games title they won in 2023, while Pakistan are already guaranteed their best-ever men's cricket result at the Games.
But silver will not be the target on October 3.
After three Asia Cup defeats in 2025 and another loss at the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan finally have an opportunity to answer India where it matters most: in a gold-medal final.
One match now separates Pakistan from their first Asian Games men's cricket gold medal and potentially from giving their supporters a reason to believe in another comeback.
