Leadership and Batting Strength
Bhanuka Rajapaksa brings an aggressive approach to the captaincy. The left-handed batter is known for attacking spin and clearing the boundary during the middle and final overs. His main challenge will be balancing his own batting role with the tactical demands of leading a franchise expected to compete for another title.
Dunith Wellalage gives the leadership group a younger perspective. He can contribute with controlled left-arm spin, useful lower-order runs and energetic fielding. His ability to perform in more than one department makes him an important part of Jaffna’s plans.
Avishka Fernando remains one of the leading local batting options. He can score quickly during the powerplay and has the experience of playing important innings for Jaffna in previous seasons. Ibrahim Zadran provides a more measured opening option and can bat deep while keeping the scoreboard moving.
Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamil Mishara and Nishan Madushka strengthen the local batting group. Jaffna can use different combinations depending on whether they require an aggressive start, a stable middle order or an additional wicketkeeper.
Experienced Overseas Players
Shakib Al Hasan is the most experienced all-rounder in the squad. He offers control with left-arm spin and can bat in several positions. His ability to read match situations should be valuable, particularly on slower Sri Lankan pitches.
David Wiese adds power to the lower middle order and can also provide medium-pace overs. His experience in franchise tournaments gives Jaffna another player who can handle pressure during close finishes.
Piyush Chawla offers a traditional leg-spin option. He can attack during the middle overs when batters are looking to increase the scoring rate. Combining Chawla with Wellalage and Shakib could give Jaffna a strong spin attack on suitable surfaces.
Taskin Ahmed, Lizaad Williams and Zahoor Khan provide different pace-bowling options. Taskin can attack with speed and bounce, Williams offers experience with the new ball, while Zahoor is known for using variations during the final overs.
Local Talent and Bowling Options
Dilshan Madushanka will be central to Jaffna’s local pace attack. As a left-arm fast bowler, he can create different angles and challenge top-order batters during the powerplay. Mohamed Shiraz gives the team another seam-bowling option and can compete for a place depending on the pitch.
Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Praveen Maneesha offer all-round depth. Their presence allows the team to lengthen the batting order without giving up a bowling option.
Sineth Jayawardena is among the younger local batters in the group, while Traveen Mathews provides additional spin. These players may not start every match, but the Impact Player rule and the tournament’s focus on young Sri Lankan cricketers could create opportunities during the season.
Jaffna’s main advantage is the number of combinations available. They can select an extra spinner on slow surfaces or strengthen the pace attack when conditions favour fast bowling.
Coaching Staff
Thilina Kandambi is the head coach of Jaffna Kings for LPL 2026. He previously played an important role during the franchise’s successful early seasons and understands the expectations surrounding the team.
| Team Manager | Shamseer Jaleel |
| Head Coach | Thilina Kandambi |
| Bowling Coach | Dharshana Gamage |
| Fielding Coach | Manoj Abayawickrama |
Dharshana Gamage oversees the bowling group, while Manoj Abayawickrama is responsible for fielding preparation. The coaching staff’s biggest decisions will involve selecting the right overseas-player combination and finding a settled batting order.
Can Jaffna Kings Win Another Title?
Jaffna Kings have enough experience and variety to challenge for the LPL 2026 trophy. Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, Ibrahim Zadran and Shakib give the batting order quality, while Wellalage, Chawla and Shakib provide several spin options.
The pace attack also has depth through Taskin Ahmed, Dilshan Madushanka, Lizaad Williams, Zahoor Khan and Mohamed Shiraz. However, the team must avoid relying too heavily on individual stars. Consistent starts from the openers and useful lower-order contributions will be important.
As record four-time champions, Jaffna will be judged by high standards. Their squad appears balanced, but results will depend on how quickly the players settle into their roles under Rajapaksa’s captaincy.
