IPL 2026: MI & LSG Officially Eliminated from Playoffs

Tata IPL 2026 has now reached such an exciting stage where the race for the playoffs has become extremely interesting. But amidst this cricket festival, very bad news has come for two of the biggest teams. After the results of the recently completed matches, it has now been mathematically confirmed that the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are officially out of the playoff race of this tournament. While the fans of other teams are busy with net run rates and calculators, for these two teams, the remaining fixtures have now become just a formality and a fight to save their honour.

Points Table Par (As of 15 May 2026)

IPL 2026 ke positions ko dekhkar hi samajh ata hai ki MI aur LSG ke liye aage ka rasta kyun band ho chuka hai:

If we take a look at the points table, the whole story becomes clear. The Mumbai Indians have played 12 matches so far, out of which they have won only 4 matches and are placed at the 9th position with 8 points. On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have won only 3 out of 11 matches and are languishing at the 10th spot with 6 points. As per IPL rules, every team has to play 14 matches in the league stage and needs a minimum of 14 to 16 points to qualify for the top 4. MI can reach a maximum of 12 points even if they win both their remaining matches, and LSG can only touch a maximum of 12 points even if they win all their remaining three matches, which is too few for qualification.

This entire season has been nothing less than a nightmare for Lucknow Super Giants. The end of this team, captained by KL Rahul, came in the match played against Chennai Super Kings on 10 May 2026, where CSK handed them a crushing 5-wicket defeat. Their very slow batting strike rate and the terrible inconsistency of the middle-order were the biggest reasons behind this flop show of LSG. Apart from Nicholas Pooran, no batsman seemed ready to take responsibility, and the bowling unit leaked runs at crucial moments. After this crushing defeat, their Net Run Rate (-1.076) became the worst in the entire tournament, which closed all the mathematical avenues for their progress forever.

The story of the five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians, was also very painful this year. Under the new captaincy of Hardik Pandya, the balance and bonding of the team seemed to be shattered right from the beginning. Mumbai suffered its biggest blow on 10 May 2026 when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated them in a super-thrilling and close match. The biggest reasons for MI's flop were the failure of their opening order and the collapse of death bowling. Jasprit Bumrah did not get any solid support from the other end, and the new players who came after the mega auction were not able to settle into the core culture of the team. Although they bounced back a bit by defeating the Punjab Kings in their last match, their journey was over.

Of course, both teams are out of this race, but IPL 2026 has given them some young stars who can become big assets for their future. The biggest positive takeaway for the Mumbai Indians was the batting of Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Verma. Rickelton smashed an explosive century in just 44 balls against SRH on April 29, 2026, and played a commanding innings of 123* (55). Tilak Verma counter-attacked with 101* in just 45 balls against the Gujarat Titans on April 20, 2026. For LSG, their young domestic talents have shown a strong fightback in difficult circumstances, giving them renewed hope for the next season.

The question now arises: what is the way forward for MI and LSG? Both teams now have the opportunity to play freely without any pressure, where they can test their bench strength and young uncapped players in the upcoming matches. The most interesting thing is that both these teams will now act as "Party Spoilers", that is, they can spoil the game of the teams which are in the race for the playoffs (like RCB, GT, CSK, and SRH) and make their qualification scenario difficult. The management now has enough time to work on the mega plan for next year so that they can rectify their mistakes and come back with a new force next year.
