Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Wins IPL 2026 Orange Cap with 776 Runs

IPL 2026 is over, and as always it delivered plenty of thrills and surprises. But the biggest story of the season was not an international star. It was a 15-year-old boy who stunned the cricket world with his bat swing and devastating power-hitting.
We are talking about India's emerging super-talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who tore into bowling attacks for Rajasthan Royals (RR) throughout the tournament. He scored 776 runs this season, the most of any batter, to win the Orange Cap. Rajasthan did not win the title and lost to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, but Sooryavanshi won over the whole stadium, and the franchise's owners, with his fearless style.

When Rajasthan Royals signed him at the 2025 mega auction, aged just 13, many experts questioned the decision. Placing such a big bet on a teenager seemed risky, and people said the pressure of the IPL and the world's fastest bowlers would be too much for him. Rajasthan's management trusted his domestic record, and in 2026 that decision gave the IPL one of its great stories.
Power-hitting was the standout feature of his season. His strike rate of 237.31 is the highest of any Orange Cap winner in IPL history, and he hit 72 sixes, 29 more than anyone else this season.
He scored one century, 103 off just 37 balls against SRH, and five fifties. He was also dismissed in the 90s three times, which shows how quickly he scores: 97 off 29 balls against SRH in the Eliminator, 96 off 47 against GT in Qualifier 2, and 93 off 38 against LSG in the league stage.
Sunrisers Hyderabad's bowlers suffered most. He scored 56 runs off Praful Hinge across the season, including four fours in a row in one over, and in the Eliminator he took on Pat Cummins, Australia's World Cup-winning captain, hitting him for 4, 6, 6, 6 in a single over.
Five Awards at the Narendra Modi Stadium
The final was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets. Rajasthan Royals were not in the final, but Sooryavanshi was invited to the presentation ceremony, where he collected five major awards:
- Orange Cap (most runs in the season: 776).
- Most Valuable Player (most impact points across the tournament).
- Emerging Player of the Season (best young player).
- Super Striker of the Season (highest strike rate).
- Super Sixes Award (most sixes in the season: 72, beating Chris Gayle's IPL record of 59 from 2012).
Many pundits now compare his rise to Sachin Tendulkar's, who made his international debut as a teenager in 1989, and there are calls across India for Sooryavanshi to be given an India cap soon. At 15, he finished IPL 2026 as its leading run-scorer, its biggest six-hitter and its Most Valuable Player.
