Mohammad Basit 3/26: Zalmi Emerging Star Shines in PSL 11

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has always been a great platform to discover new talent, and its 11th edition was no different. During a high-pressure match at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, Peshawar Zalmi's rookie left-arm pacer Mohammad Basit showed everyone that he is in for a long race by bowling a spell of 3/26 against Quetta Gladiators.
While skipper Babar Azam's century was making headlines, Mohammad Basit's clinical bowling destroyed the Gladiators' top order and gave Zalmi a huge 118-run win.
Debut Performance
On his debut in Match 23, he took 3 wickets. He told in an interview after the match that when he bowled his first over, Mohammad Basit mentioned in his interview about Match 23 of PSL 11 (Peshawar Zalmi vs Quetta Gladiators), which was his debut match. He said that when he was given 13 runs in the first over, he became very nervous and felt that perhaps captain Babar Azam would not bowl him again. However, Katain Babar Azam kept his faith in him and gave him confidence, due to which he made a brilliant comeback, taking a total of 3 wickets in the same match and playing a vital role in the team's victory.
But his spell of 3/26 (4 overs) in Match 29 proved to be the turning point of his career. This performance has made him a key bowler for Zalmi.
Eyeconic Spell: 3/26
Defending a formidable total of 255/3, Zalmi needed early wickets to prevent Quetta from counter-attacking. Basit turned the game around in his fourth over:
Saud Shakeel (12): Basit first dismissed Quetta's captain, who was caught at deep midwicket.
Rilee Rossouw (0): He dismissed dangerous batsman Rilee Rossouw for a golden duck off the very next ball. Michael Bracewell took a brilliant diving catch.
Top Order Control: These two consecutive wickets dashed Quetta's hopes, leaving the team in trouble at 44/4.
Basit's pace variations and his natural left-arm angle were becoming difficult for the batsmen to understand under the Karachi lights.
The arrival of Mohammad Basit has balanced Zalmi's bowling unit. He, along with Ali Raza (who took 3/9 in the same match), has given the Quetta Gladiators batsmen a chance to recover with their fast bowling. Following the departure of Nahid Rana and Shareef Ul Islam from Peshawar Zalmi, the two young bowlers have significantly strengthened Peshawar Zalmi's fast bowling attack.
| Players | Match 29 Performance |
| Mohammad Basit | 3/26 (4 overs) |
| Ali Raza | 3/9 (3.1 overs) |
With this win, Peshawar Zalmi have 15 points from 8 matches, which makes their entry into the top-two and place in the playoffs look certain.
Mohammad Basit has played a total of two matches for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 11 so far, both against Quetta Gladiators. He took three wickets for 36 runs in his debut match (Match 23), while in his second match (Match 29), he bowled brilliantly, taking three wickets for just 26 runs. Thus, he has taken a total of six wickets in just two matches this season, including dismissing big players like Rilee Rossouw and Saud Shakeel.
Why is Basit an "Emerging Star"?
What sets Basit apart is his coolness. Playing under the captaincy of Babar Azam, the 26-year-old bowler from Bahawalpur has shown that he can handle pressure in both the powerplay and death overs. His left-arm medium pace, combined with the raw speed of Nahid Rana and Shahnawaz Dahani, completes the attack.
As the tournament heads towards the knockout stages, all eyes will be on Mohammad Basit. If he continues to play like this, he could become not only a PSL star but also a strong candidate for the Pakistan national team.
