Peshawar Zalmi 2026 PSL Champions End a 9-Year Title Drought

There's no dearth of emotion and passion in the world of cricket, but when it comes to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the fun doubles. The PSL 11 (2026) extravaganza is now over, and Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium has become witness to a scene that Peshawar Zalmi fans will remember for centuries.

Peshawar Zalmi has ended a nine-year drought and won the glittering PSL 11 trophy. This victory was not just a victory in a match, but it was the reward of all the tears, hopes, and waiting that Zalmi fans had endured since 2017. In 2017, Zalmi won the title for the first time by defeating Quetta Gladiators under the captaincy of Darren Sammy, and now in 2026, Babar Azam has repeated this feat under his captaincy.

Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, was packed to capacity. Chants of "Zalmi-Zalmi" were echoing everywhere. The match culminated when Peshawar Zalmi won the toss. Babar Azam decided to bat first without any hesitation. In front of them was the Hyderabad Kingsmen team, which had emerged as a "Giant Killer" in this tournament and was in very good form.

When Hyderabad Kingsmen started batting, it seemed that the score would cross 200 today. They utilized the Powerplay so well that the Peshawar Zalmi bowlers seemed a little worried. In 6 overs, Hyderabad had scored 69 runs at the loss of only 2 wickets. Usman Khan and his fellow batsmen played openly against the Zalmi fast bowlers. People present in the stadium were saying that Hyderabad Kingsmen would snatch the match from Zalmi today.

But then came the 7th over, and from here the game took a turn. Sufiyan Muqeem came to bowl and he took the wicket of set batsman Usman Khan in the very first over. As soon as Usman Khan's wicket fell, Hyderabad Kingsmen's batting line-up started falling apart like the pats of a deck. Sufiyan created such pressure that the batsmen were forced to commit mistakes.

Taking advantage of this pressure, Michael Bracewell ran out Irfan Khan Niazi with a brilliant throw. Hyderabad, which was dreaming of 200 runs a while ago, was now finding it difficult to even reach 150.

In the 8th over, Babar Azam handed the ball to Nahid Rana, who was called for the final on a special tour from Bangladesh. Nahid Rana dismissed superstar Glenn Maxwell on the very first ball. Maxwell's dismissal on a duck was the biggest blow for Hyderabad. Nahid Rana broke Hyderabad's back with his speed. In the same over, Michael Bracewell once again displayed his fielding skills and ran out Kusal Perera with a direct hit.

Hyderabad had lost 6 wickets for just 73 runs, and soon the score became 90 for 7. Saim Ayub showed some courage and played a good innings of 54 runs, but he could not get any support from the other side. Marnus Labuschagne scored 20 and Hassan Khan scored 12 runs, but apart from these, no other player could reach double figures. The entire Hyderabad Kingsmen team was all out for 129 runs in 18 overs.

For Zalmi, Aaron Hardie wreaked havoc by taking 4 wickets, while Nahid Rana took 2 and Sufiyan Muqeem and Muhammad Basit took 1 wicket each.

The target of 130 runs seemed easy to achieve, but the pressure of the final became evident when Zalmi came out to bat. There was silence in the stadium in the very first over as Babar Azam was out for a duck. Mohammad Haris also departed on the very next ball.

Peshawar Zalmi's score was 33 runs for 3 wickets and by 4.5 overs, 4 main batsmen had returned to the pavilion. It seemed that Hyderabad Kings would defend the small target and make a clean sweep. The fear was clearly visible on the faces of Zalmi fans.

When all hopes were fading, Aaron Hardie emerged as a hero. Hardie had already performed brilliantly with the ball, and now he also took charge of the batting. He was supported by Abdul Samad. Together, they made a valuable partnership of 85 runs. Abdul Samad was out at the score of 125 after scoring 48 runs, but by then the match was in Zalmi's hands. Aaron Hardie played an unbeaten inning of 56 runs. Finally, Farhan Yousaf hit the winning shot and made Peshawar Zalmi the new king of PSL after 9 years!

Top performers

The most special thing about this PSL 11 was that Babar Azam won his first PSL title as captain. Not only this, but Babar Azam was also the tournament's top scorer, which is a testament to his consistency.

  • Sufian Muqeem: He used his spin magic throughout the tournament and became the top wicket-taker.
  • Kusal Mendis: This Zalmi player scored 550 runs and was the second-highest scorer. His role in reaching the final was very important.
  • Nahid Rana: He claimed his place by coming from Bangladesh for just one match (the final). His speed impressed everyone.
  • Awards: Aaron Hardie was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance (4 wickets and 56* runs). Michael Bracewell was awarded Best Fielder, and Kusal Mendis was awarded Best Catch.

Peshawar Zalmi dominated the entire season. They played 12 matches and lost only 1 match. After such a performance, they deserved the trophy.

Hyderabad Kings may have lost the final, but their journey was no less than a movie story. After losing the first four matches in a row, everyone said that this team would be the first to be eliminated, like Rawalpindi. But they made an "Unbelievable" comeback.

They defeated Rawalpindi by 108 runs and made it to the playoffs. They defeated Multan Sultans in Eliminator 1, and the match they won against Islamabad United in Eliminator 2 became the most memorable match in PSL history. Being the runner-up is a big thing for a debutant team. He stated that his style is different from everyone else's.

Peshawar Zalmi proved that the "Yellow Storm" is unstoppable. Babar Azam's leadership, Aaron Hardie's all-around skills, and Sufian Muqeem's youth combined to put Zalmi back on the map. The nine-year wait is over, and now there's celebration in every corner of KP (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Peshawar Zalmi is officially the Champion of PSL 11!
